Keep Those Teeth Clean Over the Holidays!

brooklyn orthodontistDr. Yakov Eisenberger isn’t a dentist, but as a Brooklyn orthodontist he knows how important oral hygiene is. With Christmas coming up, you’ll probably get a lot of opportunities to eat a lot of junk food, and should be extra vigilant about your teethcare regime.

First, make sure you brush after every meal. If you don’t eat breakfast brush your teeth when you wake up.

Use toothpaste that has fluoride, which will strengthen your teeth against cavities. On the topic of toothpaste, remember that you don’t need a whole lot of it. Toothpaste isn’t actually what cleans your teeth — it just adds the benefit of fluoride, whitening agents and minty fresh breath — so use it sparingly. Try brushing your teeth without toothpaste for a couple minutes; then add it on.

Use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Try to reach as many sides of each tooth as possible, and get into the crevices between the teeth. Floss and use mouthwash at least once a day; before you go to bed is recommended, because while you sleep plaque will have more of a chance to spread and do damage to your teeth.

Get a tongue scraper — it works wonders when you want to get plaque off your tongue!
