Braces Care 101

brooklyn orthodontistHaving braces can be a real drag, especially if you have the traditional metal ones with brackets. To make things a bit easier we’ve compiled a list of things you should do to take the best care you can of your braces.

1. Visit your Brooklyn orthodontist at least once a month, perhaps more or less often depending on how your progress is.

2. Avoid foods like popcorn and caramel — they’re more likely to get caught in your braces, and harder to get out. You could have a spot of caramel eating away at your braces or tooth for weeks and not even realize it.

3. Brush and floss after every meal. You can use a floss threader to get in between the wires, as well as a proxy brush. An electric toothbrush can also help dislodge particularly stubborn food particles. Use an antiseptic mouthwash after each snack, also.

4. If you use a mouthguard while you sleep or play sports, clean it after each use with baking soda and warm water. Use an old toothbrush to gently brush it.

5. If a bracket or band pops up, contact your Brooklyn orthodontist immediately. A loose bracket can cause severe damage to the progress of your treatment if not dealt with as soon as possible.
