A Melbourne, Australia dentist, Dr. Ari Masters, has been fined $25k for recent methods that may have caused severe and possibly permanent damage. He used elastic bands to treat a boy’s gap tooth, and also did not warn the boy’s parents of the consequences that might follow from such methods. Masters is well-known for his “no brace” practice, which many orthodontists scoff at.
”His treatment has led to serious dental damage and perhaps lifelong consequences for Dr Masters’ young patient,” the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal found. Two years after treating the patient, the hearing was held, at which Masters admitted he “failed to obtain informed consent from the boy’s parents when he gave them elastic bands to treat their son’s gap teeth, which caused the boy severe loss of bone tissue.”
This is not the first time Masters has been fined a great deal of money. In 2009, he used radio ads and his web site to make claims that his preferred (and scientifically unproven) method of “no brace” teeth straightening was better than braces and used successfully in over 65 countries. He was fined $10,000 for false advertising and $7,500 for poor business ethics and lack of professionalism.
Luckily, we in Brooklyn have orthodontists like Dr. Yakov Eisenberger. He puts his patients first, so you know you won’t ever have to worry about malpractice. You’re teeth will always be in good hands with Dr. Eisenberger!
