Signs Your Child Might Need Braces

brooklyn orthodontistThough it’s imprudent to get braces on a child who still has his or her baby, or “primary,” teeth, you should still bring your child to the orthodontist at around age 7. Orthodontists can spot slight problems with jaw growth or teeth at this age, and will be able to plan early on for if and when your child needs braces.

There are problems that can be spotted by parents, as well. Keep an eye out for crossbites, open bite, protrusion, deep bite, underbite, spacing problems and oral habits. Also be wary of early or late loss of baby teeth (most kids lose their first around age 6 or 7, and their last around age 12 or 13); difficulty in chewing or biting; mouth breathing; jaws that shift or make sounds; speech difficulties; biting the cheek or the roof of the mouth; facial imbalance; and grinding or clenching of teeth.

If your child is 7 or older and/or you notice any of these symptoms, it’s wise to take him or her to an orthodontist, like Dr. Yakov Eisenberger, a Brooklyn orthodontist. He’ll be able to perform a thorough check-up and determine whether or not your child might need braces once his or her last baby teeth have fallen out.
