It’s really important to floss. When you brush you only hit three of the five sides of a tooth, the front, back and top (and that’s assuming you are brushing well already). The sides are where a lot of the bacteria like to hang out, along with the area near the gumline. Then they become plaque and tartar and you can’t remove that stuff with a toothbrush; you have to go to the dentist. Your NY orthodontists will tell you the same thing.
Floss will reduce your number of cavities. If you see blood in the sink when you floss, that means you need to pay extra attention to that gum area. It needs to be toughened up. It may be hard to floss if you have braces due to the metal wire in your way, but don’t let that bother you. It’s important to take care of your teeth when you have braces so that when they come off you’ll be ready to have the best smile around town.
If you have any questions about improving your dental health with braces, talk to your NY orthodontist or your dentist. They can show also show you the proper brushing and flossing technique.
